SOMA Energy

Established in 2012, SOMA Energy Company Limited focuses on power generation, especially renewable energy.

SOMA Energy’s biomass power plants provide Biomass Gasification for electricity generation fueled by renewable fuels such as rice husks, wood chips and other solid agricultural waste products. These also have ability to run off LPG, LNG and CNG when required, thus providing greater feedstock security.

In 2013, we completed a turnkey biogas power plant construction for Battambang Agro Industry in Kam Rieng district, Battambang province. This seven-month project, at a cost of $1.5 million, led to the completion of the 1.5MW capacity plant. The 40,000m3 Anaerobic Reactor produces methane gas from cassava and food waste. The plant powers the attached cassava starch factory’s wastewater management system.

We also own and operate a 1.5MW rice husk-fuelled power plant in Kampong Thom province.

We welcome the chance to build partnerships in the Renewable Energy sector, including biomass gasifiers, biogas plants, solar panels and green fuels.

Cambodia Power Transmission Lines (CPTL)

Construction of the Cambodia Power Transmission Lines began in December 2005, and was completed in November 2007. The project, undertaken on a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis with the Cambodian government, transmits power supply from Thailand to the three northwestern provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap and Battambang. The transmission network principally consists of 221-km of 115kV transmission lines with three substations and one switching station. It is part of the National Grid for northwestern Cambodia and the future Greater Mekong Sub-Region interconnection network.

The network is connected across the Thai-Cambodian border to the Aranyaprathet substation in Thailand, from where the electricity is supplied under a power purchase agreement between the power utility enterprises of both countries, Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

The project has been certified by an independent international engineer to be of “high standard consistent with good international practices”. It is the first privately-owned transmission line in the country and was partially financed by a 15-year term loan from an international consortium of lenders, which includes the Asian Development Bank, Export-Import Bank of Thailand, ARCO International and the Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia. It was the first private-sector loan in Cambodia to be supported by the ADB, meeting its stringent social and environmental safeguard standards.

In March 2016, our $15m etension of the transmission line connecting Siem Reap city with CPTL’s existing substation, 24-km west of the city center, began commercial operation. The expansion has allowed CPTL to supply Siem Reap city under a 30 year BOT contract with EDC.

As part of its effort to provide affordable energy across northwestern Cambodia we also plan to add a fifth substation in Poipet city which will supply 22kV of power to the customers in that area.

For more information, please visit the CPTL website

The transmission line had been certified to be of “high standard consistent with good international practices.”
